Zilocar analysis of FBI data estimates vehicle theft losses for 2,500+ counties with an interactive map and sortable tables.

Just five percent of U.S. counties bear more than three-quarters of the entire nation’s car theft losses. Until now, that disparity was invisible in the data.”

DE, UNITED STATES, April 1, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — A new analysis from Zilocar, the automotive data platform, has produced the first-ever county-level ranking of motor vehicle theft financial losses across the United States, revealing that car theft costs Americans an estimated $19.9 billion per year.

The 2026 study, published at https://zilocar.com/research/car-theft-statistics, pairs the latest available FBI crime data with current used vehicle market values to estimate the dollar cost of stolen cars in each of more than 2,500 U.S. counties. An interactive map and sortable data tables on the page allow anyone to look up their own county’s theft rate, total estimated loss, and financial impact per 1,000 residents.

While national and state-level car theft statistics have been widely reported, no previous study had estimated the actual financial burden of vehicle theft at the county level. This granular approach reveals dramatic disparities hidden inside state averages.

“State-level data hides the real story. When you zoom into the county level, you discover that just five percent of counties bear more than three-quarters of the entire nation’s car theft losses,” said Alex N, founder of Zilocar. “A resident in Medina County, Texas faces a completely different theft risk than someone two counties over, but until now that distinction was invisible in the data.”

Key National Findings

The national average financial loss due to motor vehicle theft is $58,953 per 1,000 residents. Washington, D.C. leads all states with an estimated $148,071 in theft losses per 1,000 people, followed by New Mexico at $124,703 and Colorado at $118,447. California accounts for the largest total dollar loss at $3.5 billion, followed by Texas at $2.7 billion.

County-Level Disparities

The county data uncovers hotspots that state-level reports miss entirely. Medina County, Texas tops the nation with an estimated $3,013,332 in theft-related financial loss per 1,000 residents, driven by high theft volume relative to its population of roughly 55,600. Other top-ranked counties include Rockwall County, Texas and Cass County, Missouri, areas that would never surface in a state-level ranking.

The concentration of losses is striking. The top five percent of counties account for 76.4 percent of total national theft losses, and the top 10 counties alone represent 21.5 percent of the nationwide total. Meanwhile, 90.2 percent of counties fall below the national average.

Methodology

Zilocar researchers used the most recent FBI Crime Data Explorer records for motor vehicle theft, aggregated to county-equivalent totals. Financial loss was estimated by multiplying each county’s theft count by a state-level average vehicle value derived from a weighted analysis of the top 50 used car models currently listed for sale in each state, sourced from MarketCheck data. Population figures come from U.S. Census county estimates.

Interactive Tools Built for Local Discovery

The full study features an interactive choropleth map of the United States that can be toggled between two views: financial loss per 1,000 residents and total financial loss by county. Hovering over any county reveals its specific data. The page also includes sortable and expandable ranking tables for both states and counties, along with dedicated pages for each of the 50 states.

“We built this tool so that any resident, journalist, or policymaker can find out exactly what car theft is costing their community in seconds,” said Alex N. “A local reporter in Missouri or a city council member in Nevada can pull their county’s numbers and compare them to the national picture instantly.”

The data is also available in spreadsheet format upon request by contacting [email protected].
