What is marine upholstery?
Marine upholstery refers to specialized materials—fabrics and coatings designed for use in conditions of high humidity, exposure to ultraviolet light, salt water, and temperature changes. Such materials undergo additional processing, are resistant to mold, and do not fade in the sun.
Unlike standard upholstery, marine upholstery is designed for long service even when constantly exposed to the open air. It does not absorb water, dries quickly, and retains its shape.
What are the main differences?
Resistance to the external environment
Standard furniture materials fade quickly and deteriorate under the influence of sunlight and moisture. Marine upholstery retains its properties and appearance even after several seasons of use.
Moisture and mold protection
Conventional fabrics retain water and create conditions for mold growth. Marine upholstery repels moisture and prevents the appearance of fungus.
Special fillers
Marine seats are often equipped with open-cell foam that does not retain water and dries quickly. Conventional furniture uses foam rubber that is not designed for humid environments.
Service life
Marine upholstery lasts 2–3 times longer. With proper care, it can last up to 7 years without significant loss of quality.
Why should you not use regular upholstery?
Using unsuitable materials on a boat can lead to premature wear, unpleasant odors, damage to the seat structure, and unnecessary expenses. Even if the difference is not noticeable at first, after a season it will become obvious — cracks and stains will appear, and the foam inside will begin to deteriorate.
